Mr. Earl Jerome Smith, age 92 of Summerville, Georgia, passed away Monday, June 16, 2014 at his residence. Mr. Smith was born in Cherokee County, Alabama on September 18, 1921, son of the late David Oscar Smith and Janie Marie Ledford. He was an active member of the New Hope North Baptist Church where he was Chairman of the Deacon Board, and was happy to serve in any capacity, whether it be a teaching Sunday School or leading the Choir. Mr. Smith had been resident fo the Teloga Community since 1949 and was an organizing member of the board of directors for the Teloga Volunteer Fire Department. He was instrumental in getting water lines and gas lines run into the Teloga Community. Mr. Smith was an avid gardener, and a huge Braves Baseball Fan. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the 516th Signal Air Wing of the United States Army, during which time he was briefly held as a Prisoner of War. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Smith was employed with Riegel Textile, and later, the Roper Corporation, where he was a press operator. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Eleam Smith; infant brother, Jimmy Ray Smith, and sisters, Nelda Clowdis, Hazel Nixon, and Faye Logan. Mr. Smith is survived by a son, Terry Don Smith; daughter, Linda Arlene Posey; sisters, Ann Earveen Bailey of Trion and Essie Sue Rogers of Tampa; Special friend, Lou Ellen Durham; three grandchildren, Amy Shy Smith, Jeffery Michael Posey and Mary Ann and Jeff Maddux; great grandchildren, Brendan Smith, Kassandra Posey, Jaylyn Gann Posey, McKenzie Hudgins, Braden Maddux, Tori Maddux and Tatum Maddux; and a number of nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Randy Hunter, Mark Schrader, Sammy Lee, Wayne Logan, Tim Thompson, B. J. Eleam and Ricky Avans. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of New Hope North Baptist Church, Teloga Volunteer Fire Dept., Special Care Giver, Lisa and Quinton Watson, Wayne and Jill Durham, and all neighbors and friends. Funeral Services for Mr. Smith will be held Thursday, June 19, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. in the Petitt Chapel of the Coffman Funeral Home with Bro. Gary "Bucky" Brown and Bro. Randy Avans officiating. Interment will follow in the Garrett Cemetery. Mr. Smith will be in state at the Coffman Funeral Home and the family will receive friends Wednesday evening, June 18, 2014 from 6 until 9 P.M.
