Mrs. Martha Jean Housch Gilmer, age 80 of Summerville, passed away suddenly Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at her residence. Mrs. Gilmer was born in Summerville, Georgia on September 7, 1937, daughter of the late Milton Andrew Jackson Housch and Vesta Senada Justice Housch. She was a long time member of the Calvary Baptist Church, where she was very active in almost all church functions. Her spiritual gift was hospitality and she was usually one of the first to volunteer when a need arose. She was a fantastic cook, loved spending time with her family, and regardless which sport was played, she could be counted on to support her Georgia Bulldogs. Following her retirement as a School Teacher, Mrs. Gilmer spent her time helping others through her volunteer work at church, the Pregnancy Center and along with her husband, help at the polling precincts. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gilmer was preceded in death by two brothers, Bobby Housch and Billy Housch. Mrs. Gilmer is survived by her husband of 58 years, Emory Gilmer; daughters and sons-in-law, Lejean and David Messer and Susan and Lee Copeland; sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Donald Smith; sisters-in-law, and brothers-in-law, Wyndoleen Housch, Rachel and Bobby Robertson, Patricia Gilmer and Virgil Stover; grandchildren, DJ (Jennifer) Messer, Josh (Amy) Messer, Tori (Shaun) Arnold, Jennifer Copeland and Emily Copeland; 7 great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral Services for Mrs. Gilmer will be held Saturday, September 23, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. in the Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Danny Decker and Rev. Doyle Waters officiating. Interment will follow in the Green Hills Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be DJ Messer, Josh Messer, Shaun Arnold, Mike Stover, Greg Robertson, Philip Robertson, Andy Matthews, Andy Housch, George Smith, Justin Mallicoat and Greg Luke. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Calvary Baptist Church. Mrs. Gilmer will be in state at the Coffman Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. On Saturday, Mrs. Gilmer will be carried to the church, where she will lie in state from 1:00 P.M. until the funeral hour.
