Mrs. Betty J. (Payne) Smith

Mrs. Betty Jo Smith, age 92 of Trion, Georgia passed away Thursday, August 31, 2023 at her residence.

A native of Trion, Georgia, Mrs. Smith was born April 27, 1931, daughter of the late Emory Ray Payne and Jennie Lee Hammond Payne.  She was a member of the Dry Valley Baptist Church, where she also a member of the Grace Sunday School Class.  Mrs. Smith retired from the spinning room of Riegel/Mt. Vernon Mills and was a member of the Quarter Century Club.  She enjoyed cooking and loved to eat, but her favorite activity was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. John Thomas Smith; daughter, Lisa Bearden; son, Phil Smith; and a brother, Jimmy Ray Payne.

Mrs. Smith is survived by a son, Gary Smith; daughter and son-in-law, Vickie and Ralph McWhorter; 13 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Smith will be held Sunday, September 3, 2023 at 2:00 P.M. in the Chapel of the Coffman Funeral Home with Rev. William Harris officiating.  Interment will follow in the West Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will include Chris Smith, Marty Smith, Josh Dodson, Jason McWhorter, William McWhorter and Jon Dodson.  The ladies of the Grace Sunday School Class will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.

Mrs. Smith will be in state at the Coffman Funeral Home and the family will receive friends Sunday from 12:00 Noon until the funeral hour.
