Obituary

Russell Ellis Holcomb, 67, of Summerville, Georgia passed away July 18, 2023.

Russ was born on April 28, 1956 to Calvin Holcomb and Thelma (Hull) Holcomb in Greensburg, Indiana.  He graduated from South Decatur High School in Westport, Indiana with the class of 1974 and from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana with the class of 1980.  He graduated from Rose with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.

As a kid growing up in Decatur County, Indiana, Russ (known at that time as Rusty) had an adventurous spirit.  He enjoyed football and wrestling in high school, but farmwork - not so much.  He loved dirt biking, and that passion grew into a love of F1 racing.

Russ met Sharon Brown, the love of his life, in 1977 and they were married on May 29, 1979.

Russ went to work after his graduation from Rose for Illinois Power at the Clinton, Illinois Nuclear Power Plant construction.  Eventually, Russ landed his dream job at Lockheed in Los Angeles, California.  There he worked on the team for design and improvement of the SR71 fighter jet.  However, Indiana kept calling for Russ and Sharon, and they returned when Russ landed a job at Rose-Hulman as Entrepreneur-in-Residence, managing their developing entrepreneur program.  Russ’s career continued to evolve as he developed contacts from this job that led him to the tool and die business in Muncie, Indiana at Matrix Technologies.  He gravitated to the software industry working for TaxWise in Rome, Georgia, then as part owner of the software company 4PM, also in Rome.  Russ finished his career responsible for Medical Records System development and maintenance at Coosa Diagnostics.

While working in Rome, Russ and Sharon built their dream home in the Georgia Mountains, on what they coined as “Holcomb Ridge”.  Sharon continues to live in this beautiful home.  Russ and Sharon always enjoyed exploring nature all over the country but especially in Texas, Tennessee, Georgia and back home again in Indiana.

Russ helped Sharon raise her three sons Jody, Cory and Toby.  He always loved spending time with them and aggravating them whenever he could.

Russ is preceded in death by stepson, Toby Brown.

He is survived by his parents, Calvin and Thelma Holcomb, his brother Kent (Debbie) Holcomb, his sister Gail (Mark) Koors, stepson Jody (Marla) Brown, stepson Cory Brown and Toby’s wife, Juli.

Russ has been cremated.  A celebration of life will be planned for a later date.
